In a November showdown that is being billed as The Beauty vs. The Beast, it is a clash between a newcomer and an oldtimer to Brownsville politics. Witless-Cervezas, who has never been a fan of Castro and likes to dismiss anyone from the alternative news world as irrelevant except himself, isn't alone in his prediction. The last South Texas Independent Journalists Association (STIJA) has Lopez-Valdez with a significant 56% to 44% advantage. The voters look at her as a fresh product while Castro must battle with a damaged-goods image. There is no doubt that the establishment is coalescing behind the articulate and attractive Brownsville native. She may be a rookie, but her father, Cameron County Commissioner Joey Lopez, is a veteran campaigner. Between his knowledge and her charisma, Lopez-Valdez has immediately become a formidable candidate. But with an estimated 35,000 expected to come to the polls, nobody should underestimate Castro's popularity. There will be 20,000 to 25,000 voting who don't even know that the BISD is a political entity and this may benefit Castro among the silent majority who do recognize his name. Nevertheless, Lopez-Valdez and her team are categorically committed to winning and they are going to spend the money and hit the households. With her positives and Castro's negatives, it is easy to understand the reason that Witless-Cervezas has concluded that Lopez-Valdez is a prohibitive favorite.)
